Bupa has responded to the Comprehensive Spending Review, delivered by the Chancellor George Osborne earlier today.

Bupa Care Services Managing Director Mark Ellerby welcomed the new funding for social care, and described the move, which will bring the NHS and local councils closer together, as a step in the right direction.

However, he warned that the most vulnerable in society may not benefit from the announcement, citing those with advanced dementia who require around the clock care in care homes.

Ellerby also stated that the numbers of those suffering from dementia are rapidly rising, with the firm now caring for almost 7,000 with the condition, up from 4,000 just seven years ago.

Only yesterday Bupa announced that every one of its staff working in a specialist dementia care home would receive training in dementia care to improve the quality of life of those they care for.

Although there are substantial cuts in a number of departments, the Coalition Government has ringfenced the NHS to protect it from any reductions.
